Integrated management of anthracnose and malformation for yield and quality of mango cv. Amrapali

Abstract

A series of experiments were carried out to develop an Integrated Crop Management (ICM) practice for controlling anthracnose and malformation and achieving higher yield and quality of mango cv. Amrapali at the Germplasm Centre of the Fruit Tree Improvement Project (GPC-FTIP), Department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from July 2000 to July 2003. The experiments were conducted mainly to investigate the effect of cultural management on the control of anthracnose and malformation with emphasis on non-chemical means. Finally combined study on the effect of different components of ICM for mango cultivation was done. The results revealed that three applications of garlic extracts (Before emergence + After emergence + After fruit sets) reduced the incidence of mango anthracnose and resulted in significantly higher yield over control. Different horticultural practices like pruning + weeding + spading combinedly reduced the disease incidence as well as gave the highest yield over control. Bagging of fruits with perforated brown bag 60 days before harvest produced 80% healthy fruits and the highest yield. Application of different fertilizers @ urea 250 g + TSP 250 g + MP 350 g + Gypsum 100 g + ZnSO4 10 g + cowdung 20 kg/tree reduced the disease incidence and increased yield over control. Irrigation at 14 days interval increased yield of mango. Considering combined study, management of anthracnose through horticultural practices (pruning + weeding + spading) + spraying with Garlic extract (BE + AE + AFS) + application of fertilizers (@ urea 250 g + TSP 250 g + MP 350 g + Gypsum 100 g + ZnSO4 10g + cowdung 10 kg /tree) + irrigation at 14 days interval found the best and appeared to be recommendable for mango orchards of Amrapali. Pruning with 50% malformed flowers resulted in highest yield as compared to control. NAA @ 200 ppm applied in 1st October reduced the incidence of malformation, increased healthy inflorescence as well as gave the highest yield. Deblossoming at bud burst stage resulted in lower malformation and higher yield. Application of NPK @ N 200 g + P 300 g + K 300 g/tree reduced the malformation and increased yield. Considering combined study, deboossoming at bud burst stage + spraying with 200 ppm NAA in 1st October + application of NPK @ N 200 g + P 300 g + K 300 g/tree + irrigation at 14 days interval found to be effective to control malformation and appeared to be recommendable for mango orchards cv. Amrapali with plants of 3-5 years old.
