Growth, Yield and Quality of Aromatic Rice as Influenced by Nutrient Management and Transplanting Date

Abstract

Five field experiments were conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory at Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh in aman seasons (June-December) of 2014 and 2015 with a view to, studying the enhancement of yield and quality of aromatic rice through agronomic management. All the experiments were laid out in split-plot design. The first experiment was conducted in 2014 to determine the optimum transplanting date in respect of yield and quality. The experiment consisted of four transplanting date from 1 July to 15 August with 15 days intervals and ten varieties viz., Kalijira, Badshabhog, Dulabhog, Chinigura, Begunbichi, Tusimala, Jesmine, Subash, BRRI dhan34 and BRRI dhan50. All the varieties transplanted on 16 July gave the highest grain yield except Subash. Dulabhog produced the highest milling outturn and head rice outturn. The highest amylose content was found in the variety Badshabhog, Dulabhog, Tulsimala and Subash. The variety Kalijira, Badshabhog, Dulabhog and Chinigura were strong in aroma other varieties were moderate and mild type in aroma. The variety BRRI dhan50 and Jesmine were medium slender shape. The first year second experiment was conducted in 2014 to evaluate the combined effects of organic and inorganic fertilizers on the yield and quality of aromatic rice. The experiment consisted of ten organic and inorganic fertilizer treatments combination viz., Recommended dose of (RD) (NPKSZn @ 46, 11, 53, 11 and 1.3 kg ha-¹) chemical fertilizer (F₁), 75%of the RD of N +25%N from cowdung (F2), 50% of the RD of N +50%N from cowdung (F3), 25% of the RD of N +75%N from cowdung (F4), 75% of the RD of N +25%N from poultry manure (Fs), 50% of the RD of N +50%N from poultry manure (F6), 25% of the RD of N +75%N from poultry manure (Fz), 75% of the RD of N +25%N from vermicompost (Fs), 50% of the RD of N +50%N from vermicompost (F9), 25% of the RD of N +75%N from vermicompost (F10). Two popular indigenous aromatic rice varieties namely Kalijira and Badshabhog were included in the experiment as test crop. Variety Badshabhog produced the highest grain yield under the application of 25% of the RD of N +75%N from cowdung. Application of 25% of the RD of N +75%N from cowdung produced significantly better quality grain than recommended dose of chemical fertilizers in terms of high milling outturn, head rice outturn, grain elongation ratio, volume expansion ratio. The highest protein content was obtained under the application of 50% of the RD of N +50%N from poultry manure. The second year first experiment was conducted in 2015 to determine the optimum transplanting date in respect of yield and quality. The experiment consisted of two transplanting date of 16 and 31 July with 15 days intervals and four varieties viz., Kalijira, Badshabhog, Dulabhog and Chinigura were selected on the basis of first experimental result. The highest grain yield was obtained from the variety Dulabhog. Aromatic rice transplanted on 16 July to 31 July produced significantly better quality grain in terms of grain length, grain elongation ratio and alkali spreading value. Among the varieties, Dulabhog gave the maximum grain length, grain elongation ratio and alkali spreading value. The highest protein and amylose content were found in variety of Kalijira, the highest amylose content was found in Dulabhog. The variety Kalijira, Badshabhog and Dulabhog were strong in aroma but variety Chinigura was moderate type in aroma. The second year second experiment was conducted in 2015 to evaluate the combined effects of organic and inorganic fertilizer on the yield and quality of rice varieties. The highest grain yield was obtained from the application of 25% of the RD of N +75%N from cowdung. Variety Badshabhog produced the highest grain yield under the application of 25% of the RD of N +75%N from cowdung. The amylose content of rice is the main parameter of cooking and eating quality which increased significantly due to application of 50% of the RD of N +50%N from vermicompost. The highest protein content was obtained under the application of 25% of the RD of N +75%N from cowdung. The second year third experiment was conducted in 2015 to evaluate the combined effects of organic and inorganic fertilizer on the yield and quality of aromatic rice. The experiment consisted of four varieties viz., Kalijra, Badshabhog, Dulabhog and Chinigura and five organic and inorganic fertilizer treatment combinations viz. Recommended dose of (RD) chemical fertilizer (F1), 50% of the RD of N +50%N from cowdung (F3), 25% of the RD of N +75%N from cowdung (F4), 50% of the RD of N +50%N from poultry manure (F6), 50% of the RD of N +50%N from vermicompost (F9). The highest grain yield was obtained from the application of 25% of the RD of N +75%N from cowdung. Variety Dulabhog produced the highest grain yield under the application of 25 of the RD of N +75%N from, cowdung. Application of 25% of the RD of N +75%N from cowdung produced significantly better quality grain than recommended dose of chemical fertilizer in terms of grain breadth, grain elongation ratio, volume expansion ratio. The highest protein content was obtained under the application of 25% of the RD of N +75%N from cowdung. The highest alkali spreading value was obtained under the application of recommended dose of chemical fertilizer. Therefore it could be recommended that the modern variety Dulabhog (BR5) under the application of 25% of the RD of N +75%N from cowdung produced the highest yield and quality of aromatic rice
