A Morphological Study of the Gastrointestinal Tract of Black Bengal Goat During Prenatal and Postnatal Development

Abstract

Four different compartments of stomach in Black Bengal goat were identified at D45 and attained the shape of an adult form at D65. Omasal laminae appeared to be developed gradually at different stages; 3rd order at D45, 4th order at n75 and 5th order at D85. The length, width, volume and percentage of volume of rumen was always recorded higher and omasum was always recorded lowest. The intestinal loop was herniated into the belly stalk at D45 and the coiling of smalintestine started at the same stage of prenatal development. The stratified epithelium lining the wall of abomasum underwent transformationto simple columnar epithelium at D75 and the gastric glands appeared at D85. The stratified epithelium lining the wall of small intestine underwent complete transformation into simple columnaralong with the appearance of villi and goblet cells at D75. The intestinal glands appeared at D75 in the first part of duodenum; at D85 in entire part of duodenum and at D120 in all parts of small intestine. The Brunner's glands appeared at D85 in the first part of duodenum and at D120 upto the sigmoid flexure. The Peyer's patches in the lamina propria and submucosa in the terminal part of jejunum and the ileum were observed in late pregnancy. The wall of different compartments of stomach especially the surface epithelium and the muscle layer conwall of tained PAS positive materials. The secretory cells in the smal intestine showed PAS positive materials from their date of appearance. The collagen fibres were gradually increased towards the late pregnancy and the elastic fibres could not be detected in any part of GIT during prenatal development. The stomach did not show macroscopically any apparent changes except increase in age of new born. The rumen, reticulum, omasum and abomasum reached their definitive sizes and capacities at D180 acquiring 91.97, 3.12, 1.43 and 3.46 percent respectively of the totat volume of stomach. Five different orders of omasal laminae as appеared in later stages of prenatal development remained as such at birthand subsequent stages of postnatal development but length and diameter of these laminae were increased. The gastric glands in the lamina propria of the fundic and pyloric regions of abomasum at birth were also found as such during the subsequent stages of development. The aggregation of lymphatic nodules or Peyer's patches appeared to be increased in the terminal part of jejunum and in the ileum along with the advancement of the age of the kids. The submucosal or Brunner's glands of mucous type were found upto the sigmoid flexure at birth and subsequent postnatal stages of development. The intensity of staining of PAS positive materials seemed greater in the stratum corneum offore stomach and in the lining epithelium of the wall of abomasum during postnatal development. The chief or zymogenic cells did show the PAS positive reaction from D15, but the perietal or acid secreting cells did not show such positive reaction during postnatal development. The collagen fibres in the wall of GIT were increased along.withwere the advancement of age of new born. The elastic fibres/found present during postnatal development in all parts of GIT. Hence concluded that the goat is similar to sheep and bovine in some respect whereas dissimilar in some other respect. Moreover, different compartments of the stomach and different parts of small intestine together with various important component structures in the wall of these parts of gastrointestinal tract appeared at later stages of development in Black Bengal goat than that of sheep.
