Abstract
The present study was stimulated by the problem of late planted garlic
crop in Bangladesh and similar tropical regions where production is only
possible during the short cool season followed by rapid increase in temperature
adversely affects growth. Experiment was carried out to know the role of
different production system to overcome the late planted problem. The research
work was carried out in the field and laboratory of the Bangladesh Agricultural
University. Mymensingh. during 1997 to 2000. and in the Spice Research
Centre. Bogra during 1999-2000 to assess the control of bulbing in garlic
through manipulation of different production systems as influenced by planting
time, pre-cooling treatment of clove. plant spacing. growth regulators and
fertilizer application. Results showed that transplanting of seedlings was the
better for late planted crop. but for early planting clove was better as planting
material. Early planting of large clove produced higher yield than late planted
one. Early planting with aged seedlings resulted better yield contributing
characters and produced higher yield. Increased plant population gave higher
garlic yield, on the other hand. wider spacing reduced the yield per unit area.
Clove planting produced higher yield than seedling planting. and the highest
yield was recorded from the maximum dose of nitrogen (200 kg/ha). Potassium
also showed influence as yield. and the maximum yield was obtained from the
maximum dose of potassium (120 kg/ha). Accelerated crop development was
achieved either by pre-cooling treatments of bulbs or by the use of growth
regulators. Seed cloves. when treated at 10 ± 2°C for 30 days before planting.
accelerated initiation, development and maturity of bulbs than those of bulbs
stored at ambient temperature. Similarly. pre-planting treatment of cloves in
aqueous solution of growth retardant (Cycocel and Paclobutrazol) for 24 hours
enhanced initiation, development and maturity of bulbs. whereas gibberellic acid
delayed bulb initiation and maturity inspite of enhanced foliar growth. Plants
grown with mulch showed better performance in most of the yield contributing
characters, and ultimately produced higher yield than the non-mulched one.
