Abstract
Five field experiments were conducted at the Pulses Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural
Research Institute, Ishwardi, Pabna in three consecutive years from November 2016-17, 2017-18
and 2018-19 to develop production package for T. aman rice-Lentil-Boro rice cropping pattern
through inclusion of short duration lentil. In experiment 1, sixteen lentil genotypes were
evaluated to screen suitable short duration and high yielding genotype under relay and
conventional sowing methods for T. aman rice-Lentil-Boro rice cropping pattern. In experiment
1, two sowing methods viz. relay sowing method (RSM) and conventional sowing method
(CSM) were assigned in main plot and genotype were allocated in subplot. The results revealed
that out of sixteen, LRIL 22-70 genotype (now a released lentil variety BARI masur-9) was better
lentil genotype having short duration (84 days) with higher seed yield (1.46 t ha-1) in
conventional sowing method. In the experiment 2, four T. aman rice varieties such as Binadhan7, BRRI dhan57, BRRI dhan62, gutiswarna were undertaken to select a short duration and high
yielding rice variety for inclusion in T. aman rice-Lentil-Boro rice cropping pattern. The results
showed that Binadhan-7 was better to inclusion in developed pattern due to its minimum days
to maturity and grain yield potentiality (4. 82 t ha-1) among the rice varieties. The experiment 3
was conducted with four boro rice varieties namely Binadhan-14, BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29,
BRRI dhan69 to select a suitable variety for inclusion in the T. aman rice-Lentil-Boro rice
cropping pattern. The results showed that out of four varieties Binadhan-14 was better boro rice
variety which was very amiable to insertion in developed pattern due to its dwarf, late
potentiality and higher grain yield (4.97t ha-1). The experiment 4 was designed with the best
genotype of lentil (LRIL 22-70) with four fertilizer dose viz. 50-90-40 kg ha-¹ urea, TSP (Triple
super phosphate) and MOP (Muriate of potash) (BARI, 2015), 50-90-40 kg ha-1 urea, TSP and
MOP+BINA-LT-18 @ 80g kg-1 seed, 40-90-54-80-2-5 kg ha-1 urea, TSP, MOP, gypsum, zinc and
boric acid (Soil test based), 40-90-54-80-2-5 kg ha-¹ urea, TSP, MOP, gypsum, zinc and boric acid
+ BINA-LT-18 @ 80 g per kg seed and three seed rate such as 40 kg ha-¹, 60 kg haland 80 kg ha-¹
to determine the fertilizer dose and seed rate for this selected short duration lentil genotype.
The result showed that 40-90-54-80-2-5 kg ha-1 urea, TSP, MOP, gypsum, zinc and boric acid
fertilizer with 60 kg seed ha-¹ performed better among the treatments. Genotyрe LRIL 22-70
(BARI masur-9) produced higher seed yield 1.77 t ha-1 and stover yield 2. 88 t ha-¹, maximum
gross return (Tk.129660 ha-¹), gross margin (Tk. 70730 ha-¹) and BCR (2.44) with fertilizer dose
40-90-54-80-2-5 kg ha-1 urea, TSP, MOP, gypsum, zinc and boric acid and 60 kg seed ha-1. The
experiment 5 was conducted within two cropping patterns to evaluate the developed cropping
patterns viz. = T. aman rice (Binadhan-7)- Short duration lentil (BARI Masur-9) - Boro (Binadhan14) rice (CP1) in terms of system productivity and profitability as compared to the existing
cropping pattern T. aman rice (gutiswarna) - Fallow- Boro (BRRI dhan28) rice (CP2). For rice,
BRRI, BINA recommended fertilizer dose and seed rate were used. In case of lentil, best
fertilizer dose and seed rate of experiment 4 were used. Three crops T. aman rice (Binadhan-7),
lentil (LRIL 22-70) and boro rice (Binadhan-14) were grown successfully in a sequence in the
developed cropping patterns, whereas two crops T. aman ice (gutiswarna) and Boro rice (BRRI
dhan-28) were cultivated in existing cropping pattern. The result exhibited that developed
cropping pattern provided higher system productivity (58%), production efficiency (36%) and
land use efficiency (15%) than the existing cropping pattern. The developed cropping pattern
delivered 69% more gross return and benefit Tk. 81310 ha-¹ than the existing cropping pattern
due to the inclusion of lentil into the cropping pattern. Therefore, it is concluded that T. aman
rice-Lentil-Boro rice cropping patterns will be more productive and profitable technology for
increasing cropping intensity in Bangladesh.
