Abstract
The present research work was conducted at three stressful areas of Bangladesh located at USDA-Alliums' Field Laboratory, Horticulture farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh (warm), Spices Research Sub Centre (SRSC) of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Lalmonirhat (drought) and Norar Chak, Debhata, Satkhira (saline) during the period of 2015-2018 to screen suitable carrot accessions in respect of quality root and seed production. Eight experiments were carried out in this study. A laboratory experiment was conducted for germination test of recommended 57 carrot wild relatives (CWRs) accessions with 7 different salinity levels viz. 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 dS m-1 regarding pre gave the assessment to grow at saline prone areas of Bangladesh. Results revealed that accession PI 652359 highest germination (62.85%) in control salinity (0 dS m-1) and it was maximum germination (20%) even in 10 dS m1, accession no. Ames 27396 gave the longest (2.51cm) shoot and the highest root length measured in PI 652238 under control and it was observed that increasing of salinity significantly decreasing in all parameters studied. A field trial, conducted in 2015-16 of 100 carrot wild relatives (CWR) accessions under warm soil condition it was found that check variety Brasilia Agroflora (BA) germinated maximum (66.67%) and gave maximum root yield (5.07 t ha-1) but seed yield found maximum in PI 163235 (447.20 kg ha-1), under drought condition BA germinated maximum (19%) but maximum root yield found (13.04t ha-1) from PI 218076 where as minimum root yield gave (1.36 t ha1) by PI 181052 and under saline condition another check variety Prima Agroflora (PA) germinated maximum (31.33%), maximum root yield (13.81 t ha-1) found from Ames 29084, minimum root yield (0.17 t ha-1) found from PI 652370 and maximum seed yield found from PI 163235 (1000.64 kg ha-1). Another field study was conducted in two-factor RCBD during 2016-17 to show the combine effect of CWR accession and stressful locations, resulted that Lalmonirhat (drought area) gave maximum root yield (9.09 t ha1) and PI 502654 produced 35.6 (t ha-1) and in combination of PI 502654 and BAU, Mymensingh (warm area) gave the highest root yield (53.42 t ha-1) on the other hand, PI652370 in Satkhira (saline area) combination gave minimum root yield (0.29 t ha-1) in respect of seed yield BAU condition gave maximum seed yield (108.58 kg ha-1/ha) and PI 163235 produced 505.5 (kg ha-1) and in combination of PI 163235 and Satkhira condition produced the highest seed (604.0 kg ha-1) on the other, hand PI652364 under Satkhira condition combination gave minimum seed yield (16.0 kg ha-1). In 2nd year trial conducted of 116 CWR accessions with check PA and BA in warm soil condition, it was found that check variety PA germinated maximum (45%) and gave the maximum root yield (13.61 t ha-1) but seed yield found maximum in BA (416.0 kg ha-1) and minimum seed produced by PI 478884 (13.6 kg ha-1), under drought soil condition among 70 CWR accessions PI 478882 germinated maximum (50%) but maximum root yield found (11.52 t ha-1) from PI 652410 where as minimum root yield given (2.86 t ha-1) by PI 652235, seed yield found maximum in Ames 26376 (3056.0 kg ha-1) where as minimum seed produced by Ames 26404 (23.6 kg ha-1) and under saline soil condition also evaluated 70 CWR accessions and found that PI 478881 germinated maximum (34.0%), maximum root yield (5.13 t ha-1) found from PI 652410 and minimum root produced (1.69 t ha-1) from BA, maximum seed yield found from PI 652410 (1048.40 kg ha-1) and minimum was also produced from check BA (124.8 kg ha-1). Another experiment also conducted for improvement of local varieties and crossing between selected 15 accessions with two local and after getting the F1 seed a field evaluation was carried out that resulted PI 269486 × PI 652410 F1 derivatives was produced maximum root yield (9.78 t ha1) and minimum 0.68 t ha1 from PI 269486 × PA and seed yield was maximum in 196.24 kg ha-1 in PI 163235 × BA though the seed yield higher in check BA 356.8 kg t ha1. In 3rd year trial consisted of screened 46 CWR accessions with PA and BA conducted at same three locations in single factor RCBD combined over locations and result revealed that the highest germination (65.23%) was found from treatment combination of PI 652410 × BAU, Mymensingh, root yield maximum (28.18 t ha-1) was found from of PI 652410 x BAU, Mymensingh on the other hand the minimum root yield (1.98 t ha-1) was found from PI 652398 × Satkhira. The maximum seed yield (981.36 kg ha-1) was found from PI 652410 × Satkhira on the other hand the minimum seed yield (9.04 kg ha-1) was found from PI 652235 × BAU, Mymensingh.
