Abstract
An investigation has been carried out to assess the water and soil pollution of Maona and Mouchak industrial areas of Gazipur district and its effect on rice and red amaranth during 1998-2002. For this purpose, 63 water and corresponding soil samples were collected from hand tube wells, shallow tube wells, deep tube wells and waste water of different industries. The collected water & effluent samples were analyzed for 28 parameter and soil samples were analyzed for 21 parameter. It appeared that the wastewater and soil samples. from Sunipon Pharmaceuticals, Hydroxide Limited and Apex Tannery were highly polluted with heavy metals (Cu, Mn, Pb, Cr, Co, Ni, Cd and As). The waste water and soils from Gomoti Textile, Devine Textile, Aymen Textile, Rahim Textile and Shamim Textile were found moderately polluted with heavy metals (Cu, Mn, Pb, Cr, Co, Ni and Cd). The tube well water was found free from excess heavy metal load. The effect of pharmaceutical and textile industrial waste waters on yield and nutrient uptake of rice were studied on Maona and Mouchak industrial areas of Gazipur district. In both the areas experiments were performed on polluted and unpolluted (fresh) soils using fresh, waste and mixed water. In both fresh and polluted soils of Maona area, the highest yield was obtained by irrigation with deep tube well (fresh water) followed by mixed water (50% Pharmaceutical industrial waste water + 50% Deep tube well water). The lowest yield was obtained from irrigation with Pharmaceutical industrial wastewater alone. Similar trend was also obtained from field trial at Mouchak industrial area. The production of red amaranth was studied under pot culture in the soils polluted by above-mentioned industrial wastewaters. It was found that the red amaranth failed to grow on three extremely polluted soils collected from Sunipon Pharmaceuticals, Hydroxide Limited and Apex Tannery. In three extremely polluted soils, production of red amaranth amended by different doses of cowdung (CD) and poultry manure (PM) were in the following order: PM 15 t ha' > CD 30 t ha1> PM 10 t ha'> CD 20 t ha'> PM 5 t ha' > CD 10 t ha' > No Amendments. Production of red amaranth on moderately polluted soils from five Textile industrial areas follows the order: Gomoti Textile > Divine Textile > Aymen Textile > Rahim Textile > Shamim Textile. In these moderately polluted soils, production of red amaranth amended by different doses of cowdung and poultry manure was in the following order: PM 10 t ha' > CD 20 t ha' > PM 5 t ha' > CD 10 t ha' > No Amendments.
