Performance of year round mungbean varieties as affected by planting practice, phosphorus level, inoculum and irrigation

Abstract

A study comprising 14 experiments was conducted on mungbean to observe its performance as affected by planting practice, phosphorus level, inoculum and irrigation during 2002-2004 at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The results of these experiments revealed that two planting dates viz. 3 and 18 February planting were found to be suitable for mungbean cultivation in Kharif-I season; two varieties viz. BARIMung-2 and BARIMung-3 produced the highest seed yield and a planting density of 30 cm ×10 cm showed the best performance. Variety BARIMung-2 produced the highest number of nodules and highest amount of dry matter as well as highest seed yield when it was planted on 18 February maintaining a density of 30 cm x 10 cm, inoculated with Bradyrhizobium and fertilized with 40 kg P2O, ha1. In un-inoculated condition the appropriate level of phosphorus was 60 kg P2O, ha1. Mungbean varieties BARIMung-2 and BARIMung-3 produced the highest number of nodules and the highest amount of seed yield when they were planted on 18 February with a density of 30 cm x 10 cm and irrigated twice, at 20 and 35 days after planting (DAP). Status of plant available soil moisture content in the maximum root zone was significantly affected by two and three irrigations. In Kharif-II season, 5 July planting appeared to be the most suitable. BARIMung-5 produced the highest number of nodules and highest seed yield when it was fertilized with 60 kg P2O, ha', but in case of inoculation, nodule number, TDM and LAI became highests when the variety BARIMung-5 was fertilized with 40 kg P2O, ha' and inoculated with Bradyrhizobium. The estimated optimum level of phosphorus was found to be 56 kg P2O, ha1. Varieties BARIMung-5 and BINAMung-2 produced the highest number of nodules and highest amount of dry matter along with highest seed yield when they were inoculated with Bradyrhizobium. In late Kharif-II season, BARIMung-2 and BARIMung-4 produced the highest nodules plant', LAI, TDM and seed yield when they were planted on 10 September, fertilized with 40 kg P2O, ha1 and inoculated with Bradyrhizobium. A planting density of 30 cm x 10 cm emerged as the best for all seasons.
