Abstract
Eco-friendly management practices for controlling blast (Pyricularia
oryzae), brown spot (Bipolaris oryzae) and narrow brown spot (Cercospora
oryzae) diseases of rice cv. BR11 and Nizersail were evaluated at the
Proshika Central Farm, Madhupur. Tangail during 1997-2000. Altogether 14
different treatments were used including farmer's normal cultivation practice
as control and application of Tilt as the check to compare the efficacy of
other treatments. Eco-friendly management practices resulted variable
effects in reducing the disease severities under natural epiphytotic condition.
Out of the treatments used for three years (1997-1999) the extract of
Sesbania, Neem leaf, Mustard oil cake. Jute seed and Garlic clove gave
better performance by decreasing the severities all the diseases under field
condition than other treatments used. Comparatively eco-friendly
management practices viz. application of extracts of Sesbania, Neem leaf
and Jute seed extract resulted higher number of grains/ear and apparently
healthy grains/ear. The highest yield (2.97 t/ha) was found in BR11 by using
Sesbania leaf extract followed by Jute seed extract (2.81 tha) in 2000, but in
case of Nizersail highest grain yield was obtained by Neem leaf extract
(1.93 t/ha) followed by Jute seed extract (1.88 t/ha) in growing season 2000.
The application of eco-friendly management practices resulted upto 17.88%
and 22.15% higher yield over the normal farmers practice (control) in BR11
and Nizersail, respectively. The study revealed that extracts of Sesbania,
Neem leaf and Jute seed were found prominent in increasing grain yield of
rice under field condition. As a disease management tool; eco-friendly
condition without disturbing the nature and avoiding the environmental
pollution increased the yield of rice upto 22.15% over the untreated control.
While the yield of rice was increased by 25.32% over the control by
applying Tilt followed by the use of Neem leaf extract (22.15%), Sesbania
leaf extract (17.88%) and Jute seed extract (18.98%).
