Abstract

The experiments were carried out during 2009 to 2013 on the epidemiology, diagnosis and prescriptions for management of some vegetable diseases viz. bacterial wilt of potato, leaf curl of tomato, wilt of eggplant, Cercospora leaf spot of chilli and mosaic of cucumber. The studies were undertaken in 250 growers field of five upazillas viz. Mymensingh sadar, Kushtia sadar, Kumarkhali, Chandina and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. The incidence of bacterial wilt of potato (20.8%), leaf curl of tomato (55.4%), wilt of eggplant (15.6%), Cercospora leaf spot of chilli (38.6%) and mosaic of cucumber (37.1%) were recorded, respectively at Marichar Char, Boira Keyotkhali, Kumarkhali, Marichar Char and Kumarkhali. Incidence was low were in Kushtia Sadar in Chandina in Boira Keyotkhali. Ralstonia solanacearum was the causal agent of bacterial wilt of potato and eggplant. Fusarium oxysporum caused wilt of eggplant. Cercospora capsici produced leaf spot of Chilli. Gemini virus was the cause of Leaf curl of tomato and Cucumber Mosaic Virus (CMV) was the cause of cucumber mosaic disease. The occurrence of the vegetable diseases was influenced by the epidemiological factors viz. soil pH, soil moisture, soil and air temperature, rainfall and RH (%). The prescription model given by Plant Disease Diagnostic Clinic (PDDC) was effective in the farmer's field against the diseases. Five prescription model have been proposed. Models were Cupravit-50 WP @ 7g/1 sprayed 3 times around root zone at 15 days interval with application of 50 gm mixed fertilizer (Ash: KCl=20:1) per plant for bacterial wilt of potato and eggplant; Pit application of Furadon 5G @ 5g/plant + Bavistin-DF @ 1g/1 sprayed 3 times at the root zone for fusarial wilt of eggplant; Bavistin-DF @ 1g/1 sprayed 4 times at 15 days interval for Cercospora leaf spot of chilli; Admire-DF @ 1ml/1 sprayed 4 times at 15 days intervals for leaf curl of tomato and Sumi-Alpha @ 1ml/1 sprayed 4 times at 15 days intervals for cucumber mosaic, respectively. The management practices increased the yield of potato, tomato, eggplant, chilli and cucumber by 84.57, 124.02, 60.64, 35.11 & 74.44% and benefit cost ratios (BCR) were 4.62, 8.77, 7.90, 3.34 and 3.40, respectively.
